On January 28, 1986, the nation watched in shock as the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart just 73 seconds after liftoff, claiming the lives of seven astronauts, including Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space. Forty years later, we gather to reflect on this moment—not simply as a tragedy, but as a turning point in American history, science education, and collective memory.

This virtual webinar, “Commemorating 40 Years Since the Challenger: Lessons in Courage, Curiosity, and Community,” brings together historians, educators, and space enthusiasts to explore how the Challenger mission continues to shape our understanding of exploration, risk, and resilience. Through multimedia clips, historical context, and personal reflections, we will consider how the Challenger legacy lives on in NASA’s reforms, STEM education initiatives, and the enduring spirit of those who reach for the stars.

Open to all students, faculty, and community members.
